The Schools,
Universities, Offices are closed and tourist hot spots are shut down of our all
provinces, doctors and experts recommend that even those who show no sign of
illness stay home during this time of global pandemic. Although remaining
inside is a good way to protect yourself and others from the coronavirus, and
is an important measure to help "flatten the curve" of daily cases
that put pressure on our health care system but it could lead to “boredom and stress”.
If there's anything this self-isolation has taught me so far, it's this: “It's
never too late to bond with family and awaken new interests”.
Let’s talk
about some of the other productive things that you can get done if you find
yourself at home for an extended period, and hopefully these things of
productivity will help you to fight against boredom and stress:
1-Read books
and learn something new:
Buy or
download books on different topics and read them that will help you gain more
knowledge. If you don’t like reading and have a short attention span, there’s a
wealth of great podcasts and YouTube videos that can help you with
self-improvement, learning about new topics.
2-Learn cooking
tricks:
If you like
to cook, plan out your next few days of meals and cook healthy dishes for
yourself and everyone in your house using what you have on hand or learn some
new tricks of cooking from YouTube tutorials. This will also challenge your
creativity and help you fight boredom.
3-Enjoy
Netflix shows and movies:
You had the
opportunity to catch up on a few Netflix documentary shows or some tv shows
that you’ve been looking forward to watching. It’s an great opportunity to
watch your bookmark movies as well.
4-Spending
time with your family:
This is a
great time to reconnect with family and friends in a meaningful way. If you
have a partner or children, it's a terrific gift to spend quality time together.
5-Catch Up
on your online reading:
Make time
for projects that make you happy. Spend time online reading, writing blogs,
knitting, painting, meditating or doing yoga, whatever you enjoy.
6- Exercise
to promote good health:
Start an
exercise routine. Wake up early and search YouTube for yoga videos to follow
and practice. If you have weights in your house gathering dust and cobwebs in
your basement, brush it off and lift them. Exercise of any kind helps boost and
support the immune system. It’s also a great tool for managing anxiety and
stress and will help you pass time throughout the day.
7-Read about
science:
Read up on
new developments on science, download science relating apps, read science-specific
blogs, newsletters, articles and books.
8- Remind yourself why:
Remind
yourself why you’re practicing isolation or quarantine. It’s to keep not only
ourselves safe but our older neighbors down the street, our parents and others
we care about who may be extra vulnerable. Thank yourself for doing such an honorable
and selfless act, and keep your mind busy as much as possible.
9-Find a
better job:
If you are
worried about the safety of your job in light of the current mess we’re in or
were downsized, you can start an aggressive job search. Reach out to all of
your contacts as they are stuck at home too and have no excuse for ignoring
your requests for help. Put together a list of companies that you’d like to
work for. Update your resume, freshen up your LinkedIn profile, reach out to
top recruiters in your space and practice your interviewing techniques.
Interact on social media to build your brand and get noticed. Create a template and customize it to
suit each job you’re applying for.
10-Limit
media intake:
Spend some
time on Twitter and stay informed about the situation via reliable sources, but
limits your news and social media intake to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
11-Stay
connected:
Make the
most of technology and stay in touch with colleagues, friends and family via
phone calls, texts, social media and video conferencing via Zoom or Skype.
12-Learn any
Language:
It’s too
easy to let the hours, days and weeks fly by without doing anything
constructive. Learn a new language or do a short online course. My advice is
take a more challenging path and allocate your time toward productive and
meaningful things.
13-Play with
your kids:
Play your
kids favorite video games with them. Put the phone down and just talk with your
family. Ask about their lives and really listen to them. You can make this one
of the best memories in their lives. At a time of great chaos they’ll remember
how you all got through this together.
No matter
what you do to practice self-care, remember to avoid touching your face especially
your mouth, nose and eyes. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or the
inside of our elbow when coughing or sneezing to stop the spread of viruses,
like COVID-19, that are spread through droplets.
